Saratoga, Santa Clara County
Saratoga was named in 1865 for the mineral springs in the canyon above town, which reminded settlers of Saratoga Springs in New York. Hakone Gardens, begun in 1917, is one of the oldest Japanese estate gardens in the Western Hemisphere, and Villa Montalvo, the 1912 mansion of Senator James Phelan, is now an arts center. Concerts are held in summer at the old Paul Masson winery on the hill.
